The 18-Minute Spring Reset: The Simple Habit That Actually Works

This is the season when we tell ourselves it’s finally time to spring clean. We look around and feel overwhelmed. We tell ourselves we’ll tackle it when we have a free weekend.

We never do.

After nearly two decades as a professional organizer, I can tell you this: you’re not lazy. You’re not unmotivated. You’re overwhelming your brain—and that approach doesn’t work.

What does?

Eighteen minutes.

Why 18 minutes? For two important reasons.

First, eighteen is chai—the Hebrew word for life. Letting go, decluttering, and organizing don’t just change your space—they reduce stress, calm your nervous system, and restore a sense of calm and vital energy to your life.

Second, eighteen minutes feels manageable. It quiets the part of your mind that says, this is too much. Instead of shutting down, you begin. Instead of avoiding, you engage. You begin to see progress. Your brain loves progress! And that’s what builds momentum.

Choose one space—not the whole house or even an entire room. A countertop. A single shelf. A drawer.

Turn off your phone.

Set a timer for 18 minutes.

For those 18 minutes, focus only on that space.

One item at a time, decide:

Yay — keep it because you like it and use it. Nay — donate it because you don’t use it and it’s in good shape to share. Throw It Away — discard it because it’s broken, stained, or no longer usable.

No pressure to finish. No expectation to overhaul your home. This is not about making it “perfect.” It’s about beginning.

And when you do, something shifts.

I guide clients to be thoughtful and honest with themselves as they decide what they truly want to keep, what they’re ready to let go of, and what needs to be thrown away.

Because clutter isn’t just about stuff.

It’s about decisions we’ve postponed, memories, and versions of ourselves we’re still holding onto—guilt, loss, even trauma. When you clear even a small space, you’re not just organizing—you’re creating room to breathe.

Spring doesn’t require a complete overhaul of your home.

It simply invites you to begin.

Eighteen minutes. One small space. Quiet, thoughtful, and honest decisions.

And when the timer goes off, stop.

Or you might not want to.
